1997 Supreme “Kruger” Tee

1997 Supreme “Kruger” Tee

Supreme “Kruger” Tee
Year: 1997

Thanks to @jengel1992 for supplying the pics. One of the more rare Supreme tees due to it being released 20 years ago, Supreme took even more “inspiration” from Barbara Kruger when they released this in 1997. Whenever people bring up Supreme’s designs they almost always bring up how they copied the work of Kruger for their logo. Even though the Supreme logo is undeniably in the style of her work, I believe if Supreme never released the above tee which directly takes her work and just puts their box logo over it then there would be no where near the amount of people talking about it. But that’s not the case. Supreme used an untitled piece (a lot of her work had no title) from Barbara Kruger, which most people know as “I Shop Therefore I Am” from 1987. Kruger wasn’t the first to adopt the “to the masses” approach but she definitely bumped it up a notch by putting her work on everything from coffee mugs and t-shirts to totes and even brown paper bags. She also has a strong hatred for Supreme which is understandable, even replying “Fuck them” when asked about the brand.
